“I think sometimes, our visitors are boring, but I think that Dr Hodari should come more often because hearing my history is very interesting and most of all important. I learned so many facts about Africa. I hope to see Dr. Hodari again very soon.”

K. Bridges, Connie’s Christian Academy
“With Dr. Hodari, we managed to organize a naming ceremony for about 70 girls in Seattle. Understand that the Afrikan population in Seattle is about 6% so any events that honor and celebrate Black culture tend to be limited to Black History Month or one of the few, but outstanding, community heritage festivals sponsored by different organizations. This event was different because it was JUST for Black girls. The girls gave Dr. Hodari information about themselves when they registered for the event and as a community, we talked about each girl, if we knew them personally, let the names roll off our tongues, digested the meanings and came up with unique names for each of them. At the ceremony that Dr. Hodari officiated, the tradition of naming was discussed, each girl tasted the elements and learned the significance of each. The most powerful part of the ceremony was hearing the names said out loud and seeing the girl’s faces as they heard the meanings. Very powerful event. Volunteers for the day, some of whom were the girl’s parents, also wanted names and said they saw the girls using the names with each other and were pleased with how perfectly the names seemed to fit them. This was a truly remarkable event.”

"As an adult, I find that our author's visit filled me with awe. The knowledge and commitment that Dr. Hodari shared with us was incredible. I am awed at the passion for writing, community service and teaching. Not only did she discuss major events involving children, but she also showed how small acts of community service such as Alex's Lemonade Stands could grow into multimillion dollar efforts. She truly believes that children can make a difference in our world."
