Dr. Hodari does quite a bit of public speaking and sharing at colleges, universities, libraries, schools, conferences and community gatherings. If you would like to schedule her for an author visit or speaking engagement, please fill out the form below.

Author Visit Fees
(effective 2.20.10)
- $125 for a single presentation (not to exceed 60 minutes.) Book signings (and question and answer sessions) may extend beyond the 60 minutes at no additional charge.
- $225 for half-day (2 presentations, up to one hour each.) Book signings (and question and answer sessions) may extend beyond the 120 minutes at no additional charge.
- $425 for a full day, (4 presentations, up to one hour each.) Book signings (and question and answer sessions) may extend beyond the 240 minutes at no additional charge.
- $525 per day for out-of-state presentation (4 presentations, up to one hour each.) Book signings (and question and answer sessions) may extend beyond the 240 minutes at no additional charge.
- For any of the above, there are additional travel/mileage expenses for any trip that is more than 25 miles from the author’s starting point (Birmingham, AL).
- In consideration of drive time, visits beyond 70 miles of the author’s starting point (Birmingham, AL) will be considered full day, regardless of the number of presentations that day.
These are the standard, advertised rates, however, based on a host of factors, rates are negotiable. Further, upon request, there is an ongoing 10% discount for all Jefferson County, Alabama venues/organizations.

Dr. Hodari’s presentations vary according to audience. The most requested presentations include, but are not limited to:
Children Changed the World
This presentation is accessible to young and more mature audience members. The presentation briefly explores children’s roles in the building of a better people and a better world. This talk may also be modified to emphasize the role of young women in our struggles for freedom and justice- “Black Girls Changed the World.” Handouts and a PowerPoint presentation to accompany the talk can be included, as well as audience discussion questions. The program concludes by encouraging young people to get involved in the bettering of our world. These presentations are appropriate for Black History Month and for Women’s Month (although Hodari believes in Black History and Black Women’s History every day, all year).
Pass the Proverbs (I & II)
This presentation defines proverbs, explores proverb use, and reviews popular proverbs such as “when elephants fight, the grass gets hurt.” The bulk of the presentation shares proverbs addressing themes such as Ability, Character, Common Sense, Unity and Work and Productivity. A version of this presentation was developed for children and young people; and emphasizes public school core values including, but not limited to: Diversity, Integrity, Respect, Excellence, Compassion, and Teamwork. Pass the Proverbs uses short, memorable sayings to teach concepts for living happily and responsibly! In addition to sharing lessons from her popular book, Lifelines The Black Book of Proverbs, Dr. Hodari will speak briefly about how this proverb project began with an unexpected friendship, and how, through perseverance and teamwork, sister-authors turned a collection of proverbs into a book that is inspiring children–and adults– around the world! This is a spirited presentation which includes “take home messages” appropriate for all ages.
To Name Is To Claim: A New Afrikan Naming Ceremony
Dr. Hodari will consult with persons desiring an African name and perform an authentic naming ceremony based on a fusion of African cultures. This ritualistic and ceremonial presentation can be private or public. The presentation begins with a libation, continues with the Eight Bowl Naming Ritual, and concludes with a community name-calling. A brief naming consultation questionnaire has been developed and is included. Names and rituals can be tailored to your needs and desires.
Getting Real About Writing/ The Write Way for Youth
This workshop, developed for writers, introduces literary giants of color and discusses the differences between traditional and self-publishing. The informative overview-type presentation offers advice to writers, shares powerful writing related quotations and encouraging “take home messages,” appropriate for writers in all genres. “The Write Way,” a modified version of this presentation, was developed specifically to encourage and educate young people about writing. This presentation includes a long list of writing related jobs, and can include a freewriting activity and/or a lengthy “burning question” answer period.
